Your first tier residents have three Need categories: Food, Public Services and Fashion. Each Need can be fulfilled by providing one of two options, though you can provide more.

As governor, different parties or residents will approach you with requests, advice or try to win your favour with gifts.
Requests are shown at the top left. Some request will disappear after a time, others can be discarded. Important requests may not be so easy to ignore - they will open automatically if you wait too long.
To house more specialists, you can build an Officium or Officia.
Incidents are hard to avoid in a sprawling roman city. However, increasing Health, Happiness and Fire Safety will significantly reduce their impact and frequency. Incidents can affect both residences and production buildings. City Watch buildings helps you manage risk, respond to incidents and rebuild. Major incidents (e.g. plague) require a strong response.
Some buildings require fields or pastures to function. E.g. a pig farm requires pig sties and an oat farm requires oat fields.
Select the required module in the building's panel. You will need to build a specific number, which can also be reviewed in the panel.

Hostile ships will automatically enter combat once within range. Ship settings allow your ships to seek and destroy hostile ships on their own.
Some production buildings, such as mines, can only be built at specific locations on your island that are limited in number. E.g. limestone quarries require mountain slots, while clay pits require river slots.
Select an empty slot to pick a fitting building, or choose a building from the construction menu to review fitting slots.
You have gained a specialist! House them in your villa to benefit from their skills.
Roads are essential for your city to function. All buildings require a road connection to your trading post. Without a road, buildings quickly become ruins.
Roads should always interconnect - forming a network that will sustain your entire economy.
Trade Routes are an important part of a growing empire. Creating trade route are useful to automatically transfer goods between your islands but also sell or buy to rivals and traders. You can even transfer goods between different provinces. You need at least one ship on a trade route but you can also assign multiple ships of you need to transport a large quantity of good. A trade route can also pass through multiple island in order to optimize the number of ships required and sometimes delivery time. When setting up trade route you have option for each island like waiting for the exact number of goods or throwaway cargo if goods cannot be loaded. Using these option can help you preventing trade route issue or optimize your trade routes.
Select your ship, make sure it is in proximity of your trading post and open the Transfer Menu to transfer goods between your ship and the island storage.
You can also change the quantity of goods to be loaded / unloaded at the bottom of the panel.
